#PlanWhileYouCan

‘Tis the season for holiday fetes and festivities. But before you imbibe, the Texas Department of Transportation is reminding drivers to think ahead and identify a safe, sober ride with the “Plan While You Can” campaign. According to TXDOT, roughly one in four deaths on Texas roads last holiday season were alcohol-related, with 2,321 alcohol-related accidents. Sober Ride and Tipsy Taxi are a couple of great resources for responsible rides. Please remember to celebrate responsibly and plan ahead when enjoying the holiday spirit (or spirits!).

'Tis the Season for Caring

This holiday season, take a break from making your wish list to give back to a neighbor in need. The Austin American Statesman’s 19th Annual Season for Caring is underway, through which Central Texas community service organizations and nonprofits nominate a total of 12 featured families to be the recipients of donations. Click here to participate.

We’re particularly fond of this young woman’s story: Jazmyne Johnson, who with the help of Opportunities for Williamson and Burnet Counties, opportunitiesforwbc.org, is working to raise a family and a special-needs child.

Their Christmas wish list is pretty simple, and mom could use some support to get reliable transportation for her and young family.
“I cried,” she recalled. “I was kind of overwhelmed. And scared. There were mixed emotions.” Her roller coaster of emotions would continue over the next several years through two difficult pregnancies, a daughter with a severe disability and big financial struggles …

The family is working with the help of Head Start in Hutto to further Nakayla’s education and hope for a normal life.

“I have goals and have my life planned out,” Johnson says. “I just need a little help.”

K9s4Cops: Every Dog Has Its Day

Almost exactly 7 years ago, Kristi Schiller happened to be walking by the television screen on Christmas Day only to see heartbreaking images of a police dog killed in the line of duty. She immediately knew what she wanted for Christmas that year – to replace the K9 officer. However, she quickly learned that giving this seemingly simple gift was riddled with roadblocks, making the targeted donation almost impossible. From this experience, K9s4Cops was born. Today, the nonprofit has trained and placed nearly 200 K9 officers across the country and abroad.
Visit the K9s4Cops website to learn more about Kristi’s incredible story and how you can donate to this worthy cause.

K9s4Cops Founder Kristi Schiller was in Austin recently to talk about one of her most famous four-legged officers: K9 Officer Odin, who is responsible for capturing the fugitive in the fatal shooting of a Texas Department of Public Safety Trooper on Thanksgiving Day. The Last Sheriff in Texas

Looking for a holiday gift for the Texas-history buff in your family? Consider this Amazon Best History Book of the Month by Beeville, Texas native James P. McCollom: 'The Last Sheriff in Texas: A True Tale of Violence and the Vote.'

Crosswind CEO Thomas Graham, a native of Beeville, grew up hearing stories of the legendary Sheriff Vail Ennis. His mother worked at the Queen Bee diner, where Vail once held court, and his brother-in-law was a mechanic at the filling station in Pettus where Ennis infamously shot it out with two bad guys.
Today, his older brother wears the badge of Sheriff of Bee County. Read an excerpt from the book about Sheriff Ennis in Texas Monthly.
