IQBG Newsletter – Industry Day Recap

*|MC:SUBJECT|*

The success of our inaugural industry day is what convinced IQBG to do another one this year. There was no way of predicting whether it would be more successful than the first, but after listening to our panels and keynotes, and hearing the dialogue during the communities of interest lunch, I feel confident that last Thursday was a success.

This success could never have happened without our sponsors, and they’re worth mentioning:

  • Platinum Sponsor: OpenText
  • Gold Sponsors: NEC, Iron Mountain and Vedder Price
  • Silver Sponsors: SAP, Bart & Associates, Think Smart, Counter Point, Image API, iDox
  • Event Sponsor: NCC-AIIM
  • Lunch Sponsor: Stateside Associates

The breakout sessions were both thought-provoking and revealing. Our session leaders managed to touch on some of the most complex and thorny issues in IoT today – from data ownership to auto classification to data governance. We heard from keynote speakers Hugh Ritchie and Retired Major General Raymond Fox, who shared their insights and experiences. Both speakers engaged and provided a unique perspective on how IoT is impacting the world and our industry.

At the end of the day, I highlighted some key takeaways:

  • The Internet is not what’s new; it’s how we combine technologies that make the Internet of Things cutting edge. Combining technologies can lead to greater efficiencies, but we have to understand and predict, as best we can, any consequences. This is what makes events like Industry Day so valuable because we don’t just learn new technologies and solutions, we learn ways to apply those technologies and better understand what questions to ask as we work to implement them into our own solutions. The Internet of Things is making the impossible, plausible.  What matters is how big our vision is.
  • We didn’t get to this point of IoT as the “3rd wave” by thinking small. We are creators. We create paths in the daily walks of people’s lives, whether it’s streamlining a workplace issue or a mobility challenge that requires a remote solution. It’s important to realize that one of the gifts of IoT is it allows us to unleash our vision.
  • The Internet of Things isn’t “coming” – it’s here. It’s here, and it’s not going away – just the opposite. We are at a point in our personal and professional lives where we’ve come to expect connectivity, automation and even interaction. Collecting and managing information has become even more dynamic; people from all walks of life are paying attention and realizing that their information footprint can be found in places they may not have predicted. In some ways, IoT has removed many burdens, only to replace it with new ones. Through events like this, we can learn how to ease and remove those burdens to fully unleash the technological benefits that can benefit society.

What I love about what we do at IQBG, is that the EIM field is so much more than technology. Information management requires us to consider and harness practices from other fields – legal, government, and in some cases even social media – to fully perform and execute effective EIM. Interfacing with other professionals whose work touches our field reinforces the increasing complexities within what we do, and as such reinforces the value of events such as Industry Day. And I can’t thank you all enough for participating and bringing your expertise to all of us, your partners and peers.

I hope to see you at the next IQBG Industry Day!
