Veteran crisis agencies to stress preparation and practice for potential crises during “Coffee and Conversations” format

Crosswind Media & Public Relations, a top Texas independent public relations firm and a leader in crisis communications, is bringing experienced communications and oil and gas executives together to detail their experiences and offer crisis counsel. Together with Houston-based communications training firm, WPNT Communications, Crosswind will host a panel discussion during the week of the Offshore Technology Conference, May 3, 2016 in Houston, Texas at the downtown DoubleTree hotel, from 7:30 – 9 a.m.

“Crises may vary by definition and appearance, but the consistency lies in the inevitability,” says Thomas Graham, CEO of Crosswind Media & Public Relations. “The oil and gas industry is attuned to thinking of a crisis in dramatic form, such as a major explosion or violent weather event, but ‘silent crises’ such as cyberattacks or a disgruntled employee can be just as damaging if the organization is caught unprepared. The proper crisis preparation methodology ensures that organizations are equipped for leadership. The public will forgive a mistake; they won’t forgive a lack of leadership. We will demonstrate how crises can actually establish and strengthen trust between an organization and its stakeholders.”

Attendees of the “Coffee & Conversations” breakfast will walk through the four phases of crisis communications: Planning, Practice, Response and Recovery. At each phase, a different guest expert in the oil and gas space will detail his or her experience in dealing with crises, including lessons learned. Speakers include Russ Robert of ExxonMobil, Jessica Jackson of Murphy Oil and Peter Symons of Statoil.

“Our goal is to both educate organizations on the necessity of having a well-developed crisis communications plan and provide them with the tools to do so,” says Ray Thompson, Principal at WPNT Communications. “Executives and managers in and outside the energy sector can take steps now to improve their readiness and enhance their standing with key stakeholders before a crisis strikes.”
